On the 5th, Doosan Yonkang Foundation (Chairman Yong-Hyun Park) held the ‘2021 Doosan Yonkang Academic Award’ Medical Paper Award Ceremony at the Doosan Yonkang Foundation in Seoul, and awarded Professor Ji-Hoon Kang of the Department of Cardiology at Seoul National University Hospital, the winner, with a prize of 30 million won and a plaque.

The winning paper* presented the possibility of a new antiplatelet treatment method at the time of chronic treatment after coronary artery intervention and was published in the international academic journal ‘Lancet’ in May 2021.

The paper suggested that clopidogrel monotherapy** can reduce both thrombotic and hemorrhagic complications in patients after cardiovascular intervention, and thus can be considered an alternative to the existing aspirin monotherapy treatment.

The Doosan Yonkang Academic Award Medical Paper Division was established in 2006 to contribute to the development of Korean medicine and to encourage the motivation of young medical researchers, and this year marks the 16th anniversary.

* Title of the paper: ‘Aspirin versus clopidogrel for chronic maintenance monotherapy after percutaneous coronary intervention (HOST-EXAM): an investigator-initiated, prospective, randomised, open-label, multicentre’
** Clopidogrel monotherapy: Antiplatelet therapy for the prevention of thrombotic events after percutaneous coronary intervention
