On the 7th, Doosan Yonkang Foundation (Chairman Yong-Hyun Park) held the ‘2020 Doosan Yonkang Surgery Award’ ceremony at the Swiss Grand Hotel in Hongun-dong, Seoul, and awarded 20 million won to Professor Do-Joong Park of the Department of Gastroenterology at Seoul National University Hospital, who was selected as the winner this year, and 10 million won each to Assistant Professor Kyung-Tae Noh of the Department of Colorectal Surgery at Ewha Womans University Seoul Hospital, Professor Jeong-Eon Lee of the Department of Breast Endocrine Surgery at Samsung Seoul Hospital, and Associate Professor Chang-Woo Kim of the Department of Colorectal Surgery at Kangdong Kyung Hee University Hospital.

Professor Do-Joong Park was selected as the winner for proving for the first time in the world that ursodeoxycholic acid (a drug that promotes bile secretion and protects liver cells) can prevent gallstone formation in gastric cancer patients who underwent gastrectomy through a paper titled ‘Efficacy and Safety Study of Ursodeoxycholic Acid for the Prevention of Gallstone Formation after Gastrectomy in  Patients With Gastric Cancer The PEGASUS-D Randomized Clinical Trial’.

Professor Noh Kyung-tae published a paper titled 'Comuted tomography based cross-sectional anatomy of the pelvis predicts surgical outcome after rectal cancer surgery' and revealed that those with narrow pelvises in CT scans prior to rectal cancer surgery are more likely to develop pelvic infections after surgery, have difficulty completely removing the cancer, and have a higher recurrence rate.

Professor Lee Jeong-eon published a paper titled 'Use of Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy after Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy in Patients with Axillary Node-Positive Breast Cancer in Diagnosis and proved that sentinel lymph node biopsy with fewer complications than conventional methods can be performed after preoperative chemotherapy even for breast cancer with axillary lymph node metastasis.

Associate Professor Kim Chang-woo published a paper titled 'Validation of Korean Version of Low Anterior  Resection Syndrome Score Questionnaire' and successfully verified its validity by obtaining approval from the original author of the questionnaire and applying it to patients undergoing rectal cancer surgery at five domestic hospitals.

The Doosan Yonkang Surgical Academic Award was established in 2007 to develop Korean surgical science and encourage surgeons' research motivation, and has selected and awarded 31 people over the past 14 years until this year.
