On April 11, the Yonkang Foundation awarded scholarships with a total value of 350,000,000 won, to 197 children residing in Seoul, in the context of its Doosan Children Household Heads Scholarship Program.
The Doosan Children Household Heads Scholarship Program is a scholarship program to benefit children living with hardship or children who are de facto heads of household for their families, in spite of their young age.
Recipients of scholarship funds are selected from among elementary and middle school children nominated by the Office of Education of City of Seoul.
This program, now into its fourth year of existence, does more than just offer financial assistance to children.
Each of the scholarship recipients is matched with one of the staff members of the Doosan Group’s affiliates, in a one-on-one mentor/mentee relationship.
To contribute to the welfare and sound development of these children through regular contact, a variety of special events are held for their benefit.
The scholarships provided under this program generally continue until their recipients graduate from middle school, in order to offer the financial stability they need in order to be able to focus on learning.
"It is such a blessing to watch these children grow and blossom despite the hardships they face," commented Foundation chairman Y.H. Park. "Our love and interest can help provide a more decent living condition to these children, so that they may pursue their
dreams, as all other kids of their ages should," he added.
The YonKang Foundation is a scholarship and research foundation established by the Doosan Group in 1978.
The broad range of scholarship programs offered by the Foundation includes the Doosan Chinese Studies Scholarships, Doosan Athletic Scholarships and the Doosan Korean Studies Scholarships (offered to Korean Studies students in overseas universities).
