On October 30th, the Doosan Group’s Yonkang Foundation donated 12,600 volumes of books to 24 elementary schools located in the Gunsan area and a Korean school in Hanoi, Vietnam.
These books donated in the context of the foundation’s ‘Books on Demand’ program were titles that were carefully handpicked.
The Books on Demand program is unlike any other book drive in that teachers and students choose books they wish to receive from a list of new and recommended titles.
The program has been a huge success among students, teachers and parents alike, as it allows educators to weigh in on the choice of books their students read and provides students with titles that genuinely capture their imagination.
For foundation president Y.H. Park, “there is nothing like a good book to broaden children’s horizons and help them grow into well-rounded adults with a creative and discerning mind.” A staunch advocate of children’s literacy, President Park added, “Books are food
for the soul, and it is our duty as adults to offer children abundant opportunities to read and nurture their minds.”
The Yonkang Foundation’s Books on Demand program, begun in 2006, has provided to date over 33,600 volumes of books to 51 elementary schools in Korea, Japan, China and Vietnam.
